Clamming

My husband loves fishing. It brings him back to his childhood with lots of good memories.

My husband when he was 11 years old with a balin

I think this is the reason why he started to be excited when he read somewhere that during this time of year (in November) the tides are so big that we could go clamming. How much fun would that be, right? The whole family is together with friends. The kids will play in the sand/mud while the daddies dig big holes and catch the next day's lunch.

We decided to go to Elkhorn Slough (which is close to Monterey) on November 2nd at 3 pm. Clamming requires very low tides so that the clam beds are exposed. The weather was nice and we met with our friends at the spot and had lots of fun. The horseneck clams are living in the mud and they have a huge neck. The whole clam is deep (5-10 inches) under the mud but the top of the neck is out of it so you can see because it squirts water out high above the ground.

Our friend, Tobias

We had to dig in the mud and make a hole but very carefully because we didn't want to hurt the clams.

The kids had so much fun. Sophie was very happy because she collected so many big shells as never before. The next day she spent an hour cleaning them.

We came home after clamming and we made a big mistake. We wanted to keep them alive and put them under water but we didn't put them in the fridge. We just left them outside. What happened after that? The next day we cleaned the clams as we saw on several YouTube videos.

We made a pasta with white wine and cloves and when the food was ready we ate it.

It looked delicious and the taste was very good but after that the whole family was sick for the whole afternoon. The kids immune system recognized it before ours so they threw up very soon after lunch but my husband and I suffered a few hours more.

The takeaway: Put your seafood in your fridge if you can't eat your food immediately OR
when you dig the clams out put them back right away and don't bring them home. :)
